Period 1 Midterm Exam: Friday, January 9 at 8:00 a.m.

Period 1 Exam is on Friday, January 9 at 8:00 a.m.

§  Performance of In Dreams by Howard Shore on SmartMusic (due 1/14/15) – 30 points.

§  Understand the order of the sharps (F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B#) and the associated keys that you learned for your scales (Circle of 5ths).

§  Identify Time Signatures and note values in 2/2 (cut time), 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 6/8.

Ø  In a bar of music written in 2/4, there are two beats, and the ______________ note gets one beat.
Ø  In a bar of music written in _________, there are three beats to a measure and the quarter note gets one beat.
Ø  How many eighth notes are in a measure of 6/8?
Ø  What one single note would fill a bar of 6/8?

§  Be able to count measures written in various time signatures

§  Be able to draw barlines in measures written in various time signatures.

§  Be able to use various musical terms to explain listening examples.

§  English composer Ralph Vaughan-Williams wrote Fantasia on Greensleeves for the opera “Sir John in Love.”

§  In Fantasia on Greensleeves, Vaughan-Williams used two English folk melodies: Greensleeves and Lovely Joan.

§  Albert Hague wrote the music for “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”  Dr. Seuss wrote the lyrics.

§  White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin for the movie “Holiday Inn.”  According to the Guinness World Records, the version sung by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single of all time, with estimated sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide.  

§  You will need to write a 12-measure composition in 6/8.
