2013 Final Exam Study Guide

When taking the test, be sure to read ALL OF THE DIRECTIONS on the exam. There may be questions with two parts. Once you are finished, you will proceed to the Pomp & Circumstance rehearsal with the Band.

Take Home Essay: Personal Review: Due by June 16
The 500-word take-home essay must be completed by all Orchestra members (including seniors). It is worth 20 points on the exam.

1.  How have you improved this year as a performer and member of the Orchestra?  Include at least THREE areas in your response.  These can include rhythms, shifting/positions, bowing, vibrato, note reading, tone, ensemble playing, practicing, etc.

2.  How has the Orchestra improved throughout the year?  Include at least TWO areas in your response.  Do NOT mention dynamics in your response.  You can include style, phrasing, accuracy of note and rest value, steadiness/precision, intonation (tuning), tempo, expression, emotional involvement.

3.  How can the Orchestra continue to improve?  Include at least TWO areas--- style, phrasing, accuracy of note and rest value, steadiness/precision, intonation (tuning), tempo, expression, emotional involvement---in your response.

Performance: Due by 12:30 June 18
You will complete a performance assessment in SmartMusic.  The music will be given to you to practice at home.  You will only have one attempt in SmartMusic.

Listening:
There will be a short listening excerpt. You will need to listen for instrumentation, time signature and style. It will be an example of American Folk Music, so be sure to keep that in mind when answering questions about instrumentation and form.

Music Theory:
You will be asked to look at a piece of music and all the various instructions on it. These can include key signatures, time signatures, tempo markings (largo, andante, presto), articulations (staccato, legato, slurs, accents, fermata), dynamics, expression terms (dolce, espressivo, marcato).

You will have a short melody that you will need to transpose to a new key.  For this exercise, you will need to know key signatures and steps of the scales.  The example will be in a major key.

Music History and Performance:
These questions will pertain to the music we performed at the concert.

Composition:
The composition will be a short version of the Folk Song you wrote for the Third Quarter Project.  You will be given lyrics, and you will need to come up with the appropriate rhythmic pattern and melody based on the chord progression.

There will be one extra credit question.

If you have any questions, please email Miss Minnis at JMinnis@darienps.org.
