Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (b: 7 May 1840 d: 6 Nov 1893)
The Nutcracker
Written for the Imperial Theater Ballet in 1891-92
Before the ballet’s premier, Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, intended for concert performance.

Composed in 1848
Dedicated to the Austrian Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz
When it was first played, in front of Austrian officers in attendance, they promptly clapped and stomped their feet when they heard the chorus.
